The Background – A Life-Changing Inheritance

When Erika’s parents passed away, she and her husband, Jeremy, were suddenly facing a new financial reality. Erika, along with her two siblings, were inheriting a large sum of money as well as the family home.

Erika and Jeremy carried both grief and gratitude. Losing her parents was incredibly difficult, yet the inheritance allowed them to consider opportunities they hadn’t been able to contemplate before.

Neither Erika nor Jeremy had much experience with investing, and they knew that whatever decisions they made would have a big impact on their future. With such a large sum involved, they wanted to move carefully and make every decision thoughtfully.

The Challenge – Navigating Financial Complexity

As there often are in these situations, there were some complications.

The first was that the majority of the inherited investments were invested in a single stock. Erika’s father had spent most of his career working for a large company, and the stock was part of his compensation. The stock had done very well for their family, but Erika felt nervous having so much of the portfolio resting on just one holding.

Secondly, Erika’s brother, as the eldest, had been named executor of the estate. While Erika and her sister were fairly aligned on how they felt the assets should be divided, their brother had a different perspective. This made an already difficult situation more emotionally charged.

Additionally, Erika and Jeremy weren’t sure how to determine what their next best steps were. They wanted help answering some of the bigger questions on their minds.

The Approach – Clarity for Both Partners

From our first meeting, it was clear that Erika and Jeremy felt out of their element but were determined to get their arms around everything. Erika was clear that this wasn’t just her money – it was for the benefit of the whole family, as her parents would have wanted. They needed clarity, structure, and a way to make the complex simple.

We walked them through compiling everything they owned, both from Erika’s inheritance and their existing savings. This in itself provided relief and was a foundation for making big decisions.

We then helped them reduce their exposure to the single stock position, while being mindful not to trigger unnecessary taxes. We took on the responsibility of managing their investments to give them one less thing to worry about.

Over time, our team walked them through how to incorporate this inheritance thoughtfully into their life and answer the long-term financial planning questions that mattered most to them.

  • By managing the technical and administrative details, we freed her up to prioritize the sibling dynamics without added stress.
  • Ensuring the step-up in cost basis was handled properly allowed us to reduce the inherited stock position with minimal tax consequences.
  • Asking detailed questions about their goals and priorities, including early retirement and college planning, allowed us to co-create a plan that truly reflected them.
  • Helping her understand and follow the 10-year distribution requirement for inherited IRAs prevented avoidable tax penalties.

The Results – Excitement About the Future

As the dust settled, Erika and Jeremy told us that they felt the weight had been lifted off their shoulders. What once appeared to be an overwhelming task was now manageable, and they had been able to create a financial plan that at once honored Erika’s parents and supported the life they wanted for their own family.

Knowing that their investments were being managed with care, and that they’d have regular check-ins to revisit their goals, gave them a sense of calm. Instead of worrying about the markets or whether they were doing the “right thing,” they had a long-term partner guiding them. What began as stress became clarity, stability, and genuine peace of mind.
